Hamilton has been chosen as the venue for the 2011 New Zealand Long Course Masters Swimming Championships. The dates are Friday, March 25, to Sunday, March 27, in the 50m pool at Waterworld. For more details read on.
Hamilton is within two hours’ drive of the homes of more than half of New Zealand’s population. That makes it easy to get to for a large percentage of masters swimmers.
Warm-up long-course swims for next year’s prospective entrants include Hamilton’s mid-winter swimming competition at Waterworld on Saturday, June 19, this year, and Cambridge’s annual meet, traditionally held in late February.
Negotiations are proceeding well with the Kingsgate Hotel, across the road from the pool, for a cheap weekend deal for next year’s championships. The hotel has 24-hour room service, two restaurants, a house bar and free parking. It also has three spa pools, two steam rooms and a tidal flow pool, for those who want to pamper their bodies after their excesses at Waterworld, then luxurious beds to sink their tired bodies into at night. It even has a gymnasium for those who don’t completely exhaust themselves at Waterworld. The committee is looking to hold the Saturday night dinner at the hotel, meaning swimmers won’t have to worry about transport issues.
The last weekend of March is usually the date of Balloons Over Waikato. That time of year is chosen because the weather is dry and calm. Waikato has a wide range of tourist attractions, from the glow-worms of the Waitomo Caves to the Lord Of The Rings movie set of Hobbiton to the hot pools and mountain of Te Aroha to the harbours and ocean beaches of Raglan and Kawhia. But Hamilton also has plenty of options for spouses, partners, family members or for swimmers who want to stay a few extra days in the city.
