Swim Around NZ - July 09 Update

Well another month into the challenge and we edge ever closer to the final goal of 15,134 Km's. In fact to date the team has swum an impressive 12,420 Km's leaving a paltry 2700Km's to go.

I know some of you are beginning to feel weary from all that distance - after all, over 12,000 km's is a long way to go. But now is the time to dig in and get those laps completed as there may only be a couple of months to go. There are a number of longer distance postal meets that will help you out with your lengths - the 800 / 1500m and the 1 hour swims. Remember anything counts for the Swim around NZ challenge, as long as it is in the pool. So if your interest is buterfly, breastroke, or like me, lots of kicking with flippers, then get your lengths in by completing the entry form. A summary of results to date follows.

Young and Lockhart Outstanding at Aussie Nationals

New Zealand Swimmers, Barry Young and Richard Lockhart, left the Australians in their wake, at the recently held National Aussie Masters Swimming Championships. Barry Young secured 4 world records in the 70 to 74 age group (to be ratified). To help put this effort in perspective, two of the records were at least 5 years old, with the 400 IM record being thrashed by 35 seconds. Barry also picked up an additional NZ record in the 50m fly for his efforts.

Richard Lockhart also improved his national record, becoming the first man in NZ, in the 45 to 49 yrs age group, to swim under 1:10 for the 100m Breast stroke.

Congratulations to you both. Full details and times follow.
